San Francisco, Calif., Jan. 9, 2009—San Francisco Veterinary Specialists, Inc. (SFVS), the first and only multi-specialty referral hospital in San Francisco, has announced the latest addition to the hospital’s veterinary team of specialists: Diana Bowen, DVM, MS, DACVIM. A Board-certified veterinary internist, she will be accepting appointments at SFVS on Thursdays and Fridays beginning January 2009.
With the addition of Dr. Bowen, SFVS now has four American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Board-certified internists on staff, providing care seven days a week. She joins internists Jamie G. Anderson, DVM, MS, DAVDC, DACVIM; Craig H. Maretzki, VMD, MS, DACVIM; and Alan Stewart, DVM, CVA, DACVIM.

We’re excited to have someone with her level of experience and expertise join the hospital, and we look forward to the care, compassion and knowledge she’ll bring to our clients and their pets,” said Dr. Maretzki, medical director at SFVS.
Dr. Bowen received her bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and concurrently completed both a master’s degree in physiology and a doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis. She completed an internship in medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City and a residency in small animal medicine at the University of Florida.
She has a special interest in diseases that affect both humans and companion animals, and collaborated with physicians at the University of Florida’s College of Medicine in evaluating and publishing cases of combined immune mediated endocrine diseases. Dr. Bowen has been a practicing internist in California for the past 20 years. She volunteered as the veterinarian for the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, which was responsible for repopulating the West Coast with peregrine falcons, and also provided veterinary services for marine mammals at the Long Marine Laboratory in Santa Cruz.
SFVS’s internal medicine specialists diagnose and treat liver, kidney, endocrine and metabolic disorders, autoimmune and infectious diseases, and disorders of the blood, as well as gastrointestinal, respiratory and cardiac diseases. Among others, specialized diagnostic procedures and therapies include:
- Computed tomography (CT) scanning
- Laparoscopy and thoracoscopy
- Parenteral nutrition (intravenous feeding)
- Second-opinion consultations
- Ultrasound (heart/abdomen)
- Blood and plasma transfusions
