With the addition of David Geiger, DVM, to its medical staff, San Francisco Veterinary Specialists will offer neurology care and neurosurgery to Bay Area dogs and cats Sunday through Wednesday beginning June 20, 2010.
San Francisco, Calif., June 14, 2010 – San Francisco Veterinary Specialists (SFVS) has announced the establishment of a new specialty neurology care and neurosurgery department with the addition of David A. Geiger, DVM, to its medical staff. Beginning June 20, 2010, Dr. Geiger, a veterinary neurologist, will be accepting appointments Sunday through Wednesday at the hospital.
Dr. Geiger received his DVM from Cornell University in 2003 and completed a residency in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. Dr. Geiger is ACVIM board-qualified in neurology, taking the certifying exam this month. His special areas of interest include less-invasive spinal surgery techniques, management of encephalitis, and treatment of head and spinal trauma.
Neurology/neurosurgery procedures and services offered at SFVS by Dr. Geiger include the following:
- Complete neurological exam, including gait analysis
- Diagnostic imaging: CT, MRI, myelography, transcranial ultrasound (MRI performed off-site)
- Spinal and brain surgery
- Intervertebral disk disease
- Atlantoaxial luxation
- Wobbler syndrome
- Tumor biopsy/removal
- Cyst repair
- Chiari and other malformations
- Medical neurology
- Seizure and movement disorders
- Neuromuscular diseases
- Head trauma
- CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) analysis

Dr. Geiger has a tremendous amount of experience and expertise in all areas of medical and surgical neurology. Working with our referring veterinarians, he will provide top-quality diagnostics and treatment to neurology patients for these sometimes frightening conditions,” said Carlo Vitale, DVM, DACVD, SFVS medical director.
In addition to neurology, SFVS offers the following services: internal medicine, oncology, surgery, dentistry, dermatology and allergy, complementary and alternative medicine, behavior, canine rehabilitation, and around-the-clock critical care and emergency services. As a veterinary referral hospital, SFVS works closely with its patients’ primary care veterinarians to ensure pets receive the highest quality, most comprehensive care available.
Dr. Geiger will be accepting appointments at SFVS beginning June 20, 2010, Sunday-Wednesday. In addition, SFVS will be the only Bay Area neurology service that offers overnight (on-call) services for critical neurology patients.

More About Dr. Geiger – Dr. David A. Geiger received his B.S. from MIT in 1999 and his DVM from Cornell University in 2003. He completed a residency in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. He previously completed an internship in small-animal medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego, with additional training in neuroimaging and neurosurgery at Canada West Veterinary Specialists. He is ACVIM board-qualified in neurology, taking the certifying exam June 2010. Dr. Geiger is proficient in all areas of medical and surgical neurology. He has special interest in less-invasive spinal surgery techniques, management of encephalitis, and treatment of head and spinal trauma. Prior to joining SFVS as a staff neurologist, Dr. Geiger organized and operated a full-time neurology and neurosurgery practice at Bay Area Veterinary Specialists. He currently serves as a consulting neurologist for the Veterinary Imaging Center of San Diego, providing remote MRI/CT neuroimaging and clinical consultation for referral cases.
