Today’s patient story features Phelanie, a 15-year-old Staffordshire terrier mix. Phelanie is a new patient of Justin Williams, DVM, DACVIM, our staff cardiologist.
This story isn’t about Phelanie’s veterinary care at VCA SFVS, however. Instead, read about this canine gal’s Yosemite adventure and amazing reunion, as shared by her grateful guardians:
About two years ago, Chloe H. and Shon H. were visiting Yosemite with Phelanie, their lovely 15-year-old Staffordshire terrier mix. Phelanie loves to chase after things, and her dad calls her an “escape artist.” When Phelanie caught sight of a deer, she took off after it. After calling and searching, the heartbroken owners had to leave Phelanie there in Yosemite, as it appeared she was gone for good.
Seven days later, Shon was going to head back to Yosemite to look for Phelanie, as he and Chloe were just devastated. When Shon went outside, he saw a dog on the doorstep. The dog was covered in dirt and didn’t look anything like Phelanie. When he came closer, he realized … it was in fact Phenalie!
Covered in dirt with paw pads rubbed down to nothing, Phelanie had made her way from Yosemite all the way back to the Bay Area, specifically to her owners’ house! Phenalie was taken to her local veterinarian for a check-up. Aside from the pad injury, Phelanie was in good shape. With some much-needed rest and some TLC for her veterinarian and guardians, Phelanie was back to her good old self.
What a remarkable and heartwarming story about the connections we share with our animal companions!
