Today on the blog, we feature the amazing Sasha and Kirby! These little ones made an emergency trip to VCA SFVS back in November, and their human companion Bettina shares the story below. We were honored to serve as a part of Sasha and Kirby’s veterinary care team. Their regular veterinarians are Dr. Daniel Hershberger and Dr. Nicola Gillespie at All Pets Hospital.
Sasha and Kirby are both originally Georgia dogs. They were adopted – 15 months apart – from Ruffus Rescue in Atlanta, GA, where Ben and I lived before we moved to SF.
Being part/mostly beagle, they like to spend most of their time in search of food. That is what led to the unfortunate incident on November 2, when Sasha decided (we think) to try to jump onto the kitchen counter where we keep their treats. We know better, though, and keep the treats at the back of the counter, out of harm’s way. However, that night we had accidentally left a 360-count bottle of Advil out on the middle of the counter. We normally keep it in our bathroom medicine cabinet but had taken it out and hadn’t had time to put it back. Since it was a closed bottle with a childproof cap, we didn’t think much of it.
After a nice night out (about 3.5 hours later), we came home to the horrid sight and putrid smell of dog vomit EVERYWHERE. My initial instinct was to be mad – until I saw the empty Advil bottle on the floor – which caused full-scale panic. We rushed the dogs to VCA SF Vet Specialists and hoped for the best. As soon as Dr. Oglesby told us that we had done all we could and that it was just a waiting game, I broke down. The vets and techs were all so nice and knowledgeable. Leaving Sasha and Kirby – our babies – there overnight that night was one of the hardest things I’ve done as a dog parent. Thankfully, they started recovering and we “got to” spend many a visiting hour with them the next few days, and getting to know the VCA staff as well.
Although I would never, ever want to go through that again, it is comforting to know we have such skilled vets so close to us – and their bedside manner is beyond impeccable. Drs. Oglesby, Maretzki, Stewart and Wong have all been amazing. Without them, we wouldn’t be dealing with Sasha and Kirby’s daily shenanigans and cuddles. We owe them everything.
P.S. Kirby is a “frequent flier” at the vet ER. We’ve had him 2.5 years and he’s been to the ER 6 times – 3 times for foxtails (including once in the fall – way past foxtail season), 2 times for toenail issues and the one time (and hopefully only time ever) for Advil. He was also lost once after we had him for 4 months – the only dog our dogwalker has lost in over 15 years as a dogwalker/play group coordinator – and we managed to find him the morning after he was lost (after reported sightings of him running down Cortland St.). He truly has 9 lives.
We are so glad this dynamic duo is doing well after such a scary experience. Thank you, Bettina, for trusting us to care for your little ones and for sharing your story and photos. Enjoy those daily shenanigans and cuddles.
