You may remember Charlie (aka Charlie Bear), a Pekingese we featured last year in our Patient Stories series. Charlie, adopted from Rocket Dog Rescue by Gary, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2012. The little guy had a rough go of it, but we’re happy to report that Charlie is still going strong. Read more from Gary below.
Charlie Bear has passed his 16 month expiration date. The first vet who saw him (before Dr. Justin Williams) back June 2012 gave him a year and here we are in November 2013. Charlie is still going strong. His walks wind him a little and a bath a few weeks ago caused him to faint (it was more funny than tragic, with this little wet rat of a dog passing out).
His success is due to his genetics and also due to the great care provided by VCA. [Editor’s note: AND due to the support and love from Gary.] The best part of the saga is I’ve had over 12 months to spend time with Charlie and accept the fact his health issues will cut his life. I still don’t know what it is about this little monster that captured my heart – he’s old and feisty but what the hell.
When I take him to the dog park, people still say – “isn’t he supposed to be dead?” I just tell them – “yeah, he was supposed to be dead either 6 months or 3 months ago.” It’s a good story – and everyone is shocked.
The biggest indignity for Charlie is his groomer retired so I am grooming him myself. I am concerned about finding a new groomer and Charlie fainting while being groomed. I’m not the best at doggie haircuts – yet. Who knows, if he last a few more years I may have a second career—
The next follow up is in 3 to 6 months, so (fingers crossed) the littler monster will be around a while longer. Crystal does such an amazing job of handling the little guy and has won him over. Which is saying something – he’s definitely not the easiest dog for someone to love – whines, has bad breath and can be moody. But then I guess I could make the same statement about a majority of human partners also (LOL) – at least he sleeps a lot and doesn’t talk all the time.
Many thanks to Gary for sharing these photos and the update with us!
P.S. We think Charlie’s haircut look great.
